Unlucky Norway

Although I’m not a huge football fan at all, I took an interest in last weekend’s football match seeing as quite a few of my friends are avid England supporters and I take infinite enjoyment in their disappointment (I’m obliged to dismiss all England successes in Football/ Rugby being a Welsh Rugby Fan, born and bred)  and especially as their rivals were Norway, a relatively undeveloped footballing nation as far as I know but more importantly our host country for the 5 weeks this summer. Unfortunately Norway lost 0 – 1 but that wasn’t the end of Norway’s disappointment for the weekend.

MUCH more importantly Saturday night saw the meeting of European countries (and other slightly more undefined nations: Azerbaijan – case and point) in the cultural and musical event of the year. Now I wouldn’t say I was a huge fan of Eurovision, but this year I was in the perfect mindset for some Euro pop / trash and was not disappointed. Read more »

Stupid Worries

56 days to go!!

I wouldn’t say I was a particularly high maintenance person, I like a good bath and a bit of makeup, but I will not die if you steal my straighteners. So I have shocked myself recently when I have found the thing that I am worrying most about the expedition, apart from the flights – scary as hell, is hygiene.

We are on the expedition for 35 days, without toilets or showers ect. so I have been trying to plan how I am going Read more »

Not washing- Not so bad?

With the prospect of not washing for month in my mind I decided to do a quick search around to try and find out the possible effects. Although A LOT of the sites I stumbled upon were, to be honest, written by vegan hippies who claimed that somehow by not washing we could save the world… anyway here is a link to an interesting article on the matter.

Although she wasn’t spending everyday trekking, so perhaps not all that similar to what Noklan will be like.

PhysicalStrength -VS- MentalStrength

Earlier this month I -along with nearly 3,000 others- took part in the annual Ten Tors challenge. The event is organised by the army, and takes place on Dartmoor. The event gave me an opportunity to test my physical endurance to the limit, as well as allowing me to test drive some of the kit I had purchased for Norway. The physical element of this challenge -as well as the challenges we will be facing together in Norway this summer- is unmissable; you clearly have to have a degree of fitness to be successful. However what Ten Tors made clear to me, is that the mental part of the challenge is just as important, I’d almost go as far to say more important. During the event we saw individuals, as well as whole teams who had crumbled- not necessarily because they were physically weak, but because they were mentally drained. A large part of mental strength comes from team moral, having a strong team surrounding you makes a massive difference. This makes me confident that whatever Norway has to throw at us over the course of our stay, Noklan will be capable of overcoming these challenges. My team were very successful over the weekend, finishing 8th out of over 600 teams and I put this largely down to our team spirit and cooperation!Team

Decisions, decisions…

Ok I admit it, im a self-confessed kit geek, I love just pouring over all the reviews and specifications I can get my hands on, and so far this has meant I have been thrilled with the quality of the numerous items arriving in the post every week-. But I have reached a stalemate with a couple of items of kit… Read more »
